My band Sempervivi celebrated our tenth “bandiversary” in 2025. Therefore, we had to celebrate ten years of rocking stages across the country! In order to commemorate the occasion, I made this stylized Kentucky state flag shirt design.
State Flag Shirt Design: Bluegrass Style, Punk Attitude
Modeling my own design, complemented by my favorite Kentucky flag hat.
I proudly display a Kentucky flag in my garage. Every time I park my vehicle inside, I get a glimpse of our commonwealth’s seal. I also own a hat that I sewed a patch with the design onto. With this constant reminder, I am well versed in its layout. The band’s brand “Kentucky Punks” signals our heritage, so incorporating the flag in our new shirts was a no brainer.
The shirt mirrors the flag’s layout with a Navy background and our state flower, the goldenrod, which wraps around a circular frame. I added some additional green leaves to the frame, from a sempervivum plant I hand drew and used for our merch art before.
Graphic Design Story: Apparel Typography
Some versions of the Kentucky flag use a tall serif title font, and I chose to use the Onyx font to mimic that font. I jumbled the letters positioning in order to add motion, and added some white to the yellow main color for some additional shine.
When choosing the subtitle or tagline text, I used the classic Copperplate font reversed out of the circular frame. “Ten Years of Kentucky Punk” heralds our band’s achievement. Make no mistake about it: punk rock is hard work! If it wasn’t, then everyone would do it, right?
